VPL: Volunteers Needed, Writing & Book Camp

The Writing & Book Camp is looking for a group of approximately 25 energetic, committed volunteers to act as Camp Counsellors and Camp Assistants from Monday , August 9th-Friday, August 13th, 2010. The Writing & Book Camp lets youth with a passion for reading and writing connect with well-known Canadian authors and illustrators. Campers range in age from 11-17 years old and this inclusive day camp environment welcomes youth who want to try creative writing for the first time, aspiring authors with mountains of manuscripts, and everyone in between! The program usually has between 80-115 registrants from all over the Lower Mainland.

The Camp is looking for volunteers who can lead a group of young people throughout the entire week (35 hours), and volunteers who can only assist for a few hours during the week. Volunteer duties vary but include assisting campers with writing assignments, supervising campers during author presentations/workshops, assisting campers in the computer lab, and leading campers in reading/writing activities. In addition to working with an enthusiastic group of young readers and writers, volunteers will have the opportunity to hear some stellar speakers. This year’s line-up includes Meg Tilly, Carrie Mac, Polly Horvath, Susin Nielsen, Maggie de Vries, Sarah Ellis, and many, many more! A training and orientation session will be provided for all volunteers.

This opportunity is ideal for education students interested in children’s literature and working with aspiring young writers.

For more information on the Camp, and a downloadable volunteer application, please visit the program’s website at: www.vpl.ca/bookcamp
